    Stoneware Color Selection Guide

    Stoneware with Stoneware Washes

Mayco’s Washes are an extremely versatile product that can stretch your palette as well as your budget.  Use a Mayco Wash over or under one of your favorite Mayco Stoneware glaze and fire to cone 5 or 6. Glazes shown here: SW-204 Amber Topaz, SW-304 Copper Wash, and SW-201 Turquoise.

    Use Alone or in Combination

Mayco’s Washes are versatile in use and firing range. They can be used alone as a body stain or surface treatment or used over or under another glaze- ideal for image transfer techniques and line work. Will perform in firing temperatures from cone 06-cone 10. Available in Iron, Rutile, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt finishes.

    General Use

Stoneware washes can be used alone or in combination with other glazes. As they are highly concentrated, we recommend you thin with water prior to use. They can be applied to earthenware clay bodies and low fired as well as to stoneware bodies for higher temperature firing. Test prior to use is recommended.

    Application Recommendations

The following application recommendations are based upon the original product development intent and use for the product.

    • Shake for 5-6 seconds before use. Stir well.
    • Dispense amount needed into a separate container and thin with water. Dispensing the glaze onto a palette (tile, plate, etc.) - helps prevent against contamination of the contents in the jar.
    • For all-over coverage: brush on 1 to 2 coats; allow to dry in-between each coat.
    • Washes are concentrated – adding water is recommended. Mix only the amount you plan to use in one session.
    • Can be fired from cone 06 to cone 9/10. Washes can be applied to greenware and bisque.
    • The choice of clay body, thickness of glaze application, firing process and temperature will affect the fired results. Always test in your kiln, on your clay body.
